Why convert AVIF to JPG?

AVIF is a modern, highly efficient format built on the AV1 video codec — it can produce smaller files than JPG at similar quality. But because it's newer, plenty of photo viewers, editors, printing services, and older devices still can't open it. Converting to JPG gives you a file that works absolutely everywhere, which matters when you're sending an image somewhere you don't control the software.

AVIF vs JPG: what changes?

Both can hold photographic images, but they target different priorities:

  • Compatibility — JPG is the safest choice for email, older apps, printing services, and any tool that predates AVIF.
  • File size — AVIF is usually more efficient, so expect the JPG to be somewhat larger for the same visual quality.
  • Browser support — AVIF needs Chrome 88+, Firefox 93+, or Safari 16.4+ to even open; JPG opens everywhere without exception.
  • Transparency — AVIF can support it; JPG cannot, so transparent areas become solid white after conversion.

Common reasons to convert AVIF to JPG

  • Saving an image from a website that only serves AVIF, for use in software that doesn't support it.
  • Attaching a downloaded AVIF photo to an email or document that expects a standard image format.
  • Uploading to a marketplace, print shop, or CMS that rejects AVIF files.
  • Opening an AVIF image in an older editor, mobile app, or design tool that only reads JPG or PNG.

Frequently asked questions

Are my AVIF images uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion happens locally on your device using your browser’s built-in image decoder and the Canvas API. Nothing is sent to a server, so your images never leave your computer or phone.
Do I need a specific browser to convert AVIF?
You need a reasonably recent browser with native AVIF decoding: Chrome 88+, Firefox 93+, or Safari 16.4+. Older browsers can’t decode AVIF at all, so the conversion will fail — update your browser if that happens.
Why would I convert AVIF to JPG if AVIF is smaller?
AVIF usually compresses more efficiently than JPG, but support outside modern browsers is still limited — many photo apps, older editors, and some social platforms don't accept it yet. Converting to JPG trades some file size for compatibility everywhere.
Will the JPG look the same as the AVIF?
Visually, yes — at the default quality the difference is not noticeable for photos. Both formats are lossy, so re-encoding to JPG adds a small, generally imperceptible amount of extra compression on top of what AVIF already applied.
What happens to transparent AVIF images?
JPG can't store transparency, so any transparent or semi-transparent pixels in the AVIF are filled with a solid white background during conversion. If you need to keep transparency, convert to PNG instead.
Can I convert multiple AVIF files at once?
Yes. Drop in as many AVIF images as you like — each one is converted and offered as its own JPG download, so you can batch a whole folder in one pass.
Does this work with animated AVIF files?
No — animated AVIF files are converted using only their first frame, since JPG has no concept of animation. For animated images, keep the original AVIF or convert to a video format instead.
